Members of the Fallston Fins Swim Team are in the pool every week in a competitive meet, but next week the competition will be a bit different.
Since 2009, the Fins have hosted a swim fundraiser to benefit and remember a lost teammate, Wilson Brady, who was killed in a tragic car accident in Bel Air in November 2008. Brady's mother, Katie, was also killed in the crash.
Wilson, known as Wil to friends and family, was a fantastic, lovable 8-year-old who always had a smile on his face and an inherent talent for swimming.
On July 16, the Fins will host their sixth annual Swim-A-Thon at the Fallston Swim Club to honor Wil and remember his name. The event is held to benefit Katie and Wil's Trail at the Marshy Point Nature Center in Chase.
The trail is a wonderful place for families to walk, bike and enjoy nature, something Katie and Wil frequently enjoyed. The first phase of Katie and Wil's Trail was completed in the fall of 2013. In five years, the Fins have raised more than $20,000 which allowed the completion of the first phase.
The Marsh Point website, http://www.marshypoint.org states, "Katie and Wil's Trail is a paved accessible trail that begins at the Nature Center and extends past the park's wetland restoration area to Brinkman's Road. Dedicated in memory of Katie and Wil Brady, this trail is blazed orange and includes excellent views from an observation platform and bridge over Minnow Branch Creek."
The goal of the Swim-a-Thon is for team members to collect either pledges per lap or flat donations. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Each age group will have an allotted hour when each child can challenge themselves individually to swim the most number of laps possible. Breakfast will be provided for the swimmers after their hour is complete.
The swim schedule is 15-18-year-olds (7 to 8 a.m.); 13-14 (7 to 8 a.m.); 11-12 (8 to 9 a.m.); 9-10 (8 to 9 a.m.) 7-8 (9 to 10 a.m.) and 6 and under (9 to 10 a.m.).
For swimmers who cannot make Wednesday's times, lanes will be set up at Tuesday's practice between 6 and 7 p.m.
The Fins will also be having a bingo, with a date to be determined, with all proceeds going to the Marshy Point Nature Center.
Any donation inquiries and questions additional questions can be directed to Shari Kronsberg, 410-817-9090, or Gwen Brady, 410-803-0729.
