In beating the Bo Manor Eagles, 10-0, in the UCBAC softball title game at Rising Sun Wednesday night, the Havre de Grace Warriors completed a rare task – capture a conference crown one year after being promoted from the Susquehanna (lower) Division.
The Warriors, who won the lower-division title last year but lost to C. Milton Wright in the conference championship game, stormed through the Chesapeake (upper) Division this season, finishing with a 9-3 record and clinching the top spot by beating Rising Sun in both ends of a doubleheader last Friday. Competition in the Chesapeake was not easy, with C. Milton Wright finishing just one game back at 8-4 and North Harford and Bel Air tying for third with 7-5 marks in division play.
Wednesday's championship contest was called off after the bottom of the sixth because Bo Manor, the host team, was trailing by 10 runs.
Havre de Grace hurler Megan Thompson went the distance, scattering eight hits, striking out five and issuing two walks in a complete-game shutout.
The Warriors jumped on Bo Manor in the first inning, plating four runs before the Susquehanna Division champs could retire the side. Thompson had a two-RBI double, while Kateri Peters motored around for an inside-the-park home run. Riley Arnold roped an RBI single and Lindsey Fenner had a double in the four-run rally.
Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings. Bo Manor loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but Thompson was able to retire the next two hitters and save the shutout.
The Warriors were back in the fifth, scoring twice to go up, 6-0.
In the top of the sixth, Thompson came to the plate with two runners on and smashed a three-run homer, giving the Warriors a 9-0 edge. Havre de Grace plated one more before Bo Manor escaped the inning.
Peters finished the game 3-for-3, while Thompson racked up five RBIs with her two hits. Arnold was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Fenner scored a pair of runs. Taylor Smith was 1-for-3 and Olivia Dubois was 2-for-3.

The North Harford Hawks closed out their regular-season schedule Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to the visiting Rising Sun Tigers in a Chesapeake Division contest.
The loss knocked North Harford down to 12-5 overall and 7-5 against upper-division foes.
North Harford starter Alexis Lyttle went three innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, surrendering one walk and striking out two.
