Running with Santa's sleigh and his reindeer

Collegiate athletes Elizabeth Tauber, Wilhelmina Austin and Lenier Tucker collectively earned a Harford County triple Saturday in an invitational indoor track meet at Princeton University.

Tauber won the 3,000-meter run and set yet another Towson University school record, her second in four days. Timed in 10:11.01, she won the 15-lap event by 6 seconds, and bettered the mark set in 2008 by Britta Nelson, of Havre de Grace, by 4 seconds.

Austin, also of Towson, won the long jump, leaping 18 feet, 1 1/2 inches to edge Christine Charles, of Rider, by 1/2 inch. The mark was the indoor best for the Edgewood alumna, who also placed third in the triple jump at 37 feet, 6 inches.

Tucker won the 1,000-meter run in 2:36.95, finishing the five-lap race 5 meters ahead of Steve Hyland, of Johns Hopkins. The Morgan State freshman from Edgewood opened his indoor season one day earlier with a ninth-place finish in the 1500 in 4:11.30 in the Navy Invitational in Annapolis.

The meet, held at Princeton's Jadwin Gym, drew entries from seven college teams.

Elsewhere, North Harford grad Noah Hutton, a UMBC junior, ran the 5,000 meters in 15:23.77 in the Bison Opener at Bucknell Saturday, placing fourth.

Two freshmen from Edgewood ran their first track meet for Wesley College of Dover, De. Saturday at Ursinus College in Pa. Ray King placed fifth in the triple jump at 41-9, and Noel Spencer, sixth in the 200 in 24.08.

Santa's Sleigh 5K

Courtney Waldhauser held off a challenge from Jennifer Bouffard, and Michael Frank withstood one from Mike Feinberg Saturday in the annual Santa's Sleigh 5K at the Arena Club in Bel Air.

Waldhauser won the women's race in 20:34, bettering her best time of the last two years. Bouffard finished 5 seconds behind her in second place. Kelly Machala took third in 20:49.

Frank led all 114 finishers over the course through Harford Community College in 17:59. Feinberg finished second in 18:23, and Kirk Ingold, third in 19:11.

Age-group award winners were Fran Mirabelle (23:50) and Duyen Brisker (32:20) in over-60; George Casados (21:59) and Lori Olszewski (22:13), 50-59; Joe Roden (19:11) and Anne Ford (25:21), 40-49; Ryan Weller (19:57) and Christina Jordan (21:44), 30-39; Nicholas Scarpola (21:57) and Ritsa Karakanas (21:39), 20-29; Ryan Iacaruso (19:17) and Nicki Iacaruso (22:04), 13-19; Kyle Bouffard (27:10) and Courtney Boseck (25:49), under-13.

Running with the Reindeer 5K

Matt Burdette and Kate Hoppe led the way as 313 runners turned out in breezy, 39-degree weather for the Running with the Reindeer 5K in Havre de Grace Saturday.

Burdette ran 19:32 to win easily over runner-up Ryan Cascardo, 20:12. Duane Christy took third in 20:32.

Hoppe won the women's race in 21:32, finishing 1:09 ahead of Sarah Rusk. Kara Zimmerman finished third in 23:11.

Age-group winners were Joel Leff (21:24) and Bonnie Hallock (29:33) in 60-69; Rhonda Utz (24:46) and Duane Christy, 50-59; Matt Kitchin (23:04) and Tarah Wilson (23:42), 40-49; Sara Rusk (22:41) and Ryan Cascardo, 30-39; Kara Zimmerman (23:11) and Dan Van Buren (23:57), 19-29; Alicea Fitzpatrick (23:34) and Will Oktavec (25:34), 14-18; Lily Bowditch (23:24) and Andrew Brinsky (25:40), under-14.

In Races Elsewhere

Kelley O'Neill, a C. Milton Wright senior, won the under-20 age group in the Seashore Half Marathon in Rehoboth Beach, De., Saturday. She completed the 13.1 miles in 1:52:27. Fastest among the Harford runners in the field of 1,200 was Lorrie Chieffo in 1:47:17.

Jennifer Perkovich, of Joppa, and Karly Pascuzzi, of Havre de Grace, were age-group winners in the Sea Colony Turkey Trot in Rehoboth Beach Dec. 1. Perkovich placed ninth among the women and first in 40-44 in 23:11. Pascuzzi, first in 35-39, finished one place behind Perkovich in 23:19.

Taylor Chan, of Forest Hill, won the 14-19 age group in the Huffin' for Pumpkin Pie 5K in Rehoboth Beach Nov. 30, leading the Chans to a strong family performance. Ryan Chan placed third in 10-13 in 23:10. Father Sam Chan was fourth in 45-49 in 20:27, and Dylan Chan, 17, placed 17th among the 553 finishers in 20:13.

Zach Walker, 10, of Fallston, finished seventh among 283 runners in the Charlie's Run 5K in Sparks Sunday. Timed in 20:21, he won the under-11 age group.
