The Harford County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Joppa traffic accident in which a man was killed and another was hospitalized Monday afternoon.

Robert V. Hall, 82, of the 700 block W. Ring Factory Road in Bel Air, was pronounced dead at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore County, the Sheriff's Office said Monday evening.

Hall was driving a 1998 white Ford Expedition on southwest on Joppa Farm Road around 1:30 p.m. when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck head on a 2002 gold Ford Expedition driven by Antonio D. Cottrell, 48, of the 300 block of Montico Terrace in Joppatowne, Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins said.

Cottrell was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore where he was listed in good condition, Hopkins said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Hopkins said.

The 700 block of Joppa Farm Road, between Breslin Road and Falconer Road, was closed for several hours, according to the Sheriff's Office and the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, which responded.

Andy Doyle, spokesman for the fire company, said one victim, since identified as Hall, was taken by ambulance to Franklin Square in what the Sheriff's Office said was "grave" condition.

Doyle said the ambulance being used to take the second victim, since identified as Cottrell, to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air was diverted to Johns Hopkins Bayview.
