HCC women win, men lose in college hoops

The Harford Community College women's basketball team (15-3, 7-1 MD JUCO) earned an 86-49 conference victory over Garrett (9-5, 4-3 MD JUCO) on Wednesday at the APGFCU Arena. The Fighting Owls had three players score at least 20 points.

Monique Cheek's career-high 20 points on eight-of-18 shooting was the difference. She also totaled 11 rebounds and seven assists for her best game as a Fighting Owl.

Ashley Smith led all scorers with 25 points and Capree Garner tallied 22 in the win. Connor Hanley (Bel Air) had 12 points and nine rebounds for Harford.

The Fighting Owls travel to Volunteer State on Saturday.

Harford men fall to Garrett 

The Harford men's basketball team ran out of gas late in an 81-68 conference loss to visiting Garrett on Wednesday.

The Fighting Owls led by one at the half, 30-29, despite receiving zero points from its top scorer, Chidozie Omile. Harford built an 11-point lead at the beginning of the second half as Omile scored 10 points in an 11-2 spurt.

The Lakers chipped away and took the lead for good at the 10:17 mark. Harford cut the lead to four a few times late, but Garrett pulled away with ball control and free throws.

Wyatt Smith (John Carroll) netted 22 points in a well-balanced evening. Telvonne Lambert (Harford Tech) added 11 points, while Tyler Napierela netted a career-best 10 points.

The Fighting Owls travel to Volunteer State on Saturday.
