CMW, Aberdeen open 2014 with girls basketball wins

A handful of Harford County girls basketball teams returned to the court Monday, playing for the first time in the new year.

Highlighting the action, C. Milton Wright visited Edgewood in UCBAC Chesapeake (upper)Division play, and the Mustangs left with an 69-53 win. The Mustangs led by just two, 27-25, at the half.

Emma Hahner had a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds to pace the winners, while Lauren Haggerty chipped in with 16 points and five assists.

No stats were reported for Edgewood.

Eagles win big

Aberdeen was also in road action, visiting Elkton in Chesapeake play. The Eagles had no trouble beating the Golden Elks, 53-5, after leading 38-5 at the half.

Stephanie Jones scored 22 points to lead the Eagles and Nazje Norton added 18. Taylor Cole added seven points for Aberdeen.

Bobcats lose on road

Bel Air continued its season with a non-conference game at Perry Hall. The Bobcats led 28-25 at the half, but lost 58-55.

Samantha Barnett scored 22 points to lead all scorers.

Patriots fall too

John Carroll also lost Monday night, falling at Notre Dame Prep, 48-38, in IAAM B Conference play.

Hailey Kyger scored 14 points to lead the Patriots and Marta Moix added nine points. Also for John Carroll, Rita Watson scored seven points, Madison Schutz scored five and Lucie Passwater scored three.
