With Mother Nature putting the clamps on Harford County high school athletics Friday and again Monday, action was somewhat limited. Harford Tech, however, was the site for action, hosting the Tech Duals in a one-day (Saturday only) event.
Another county team, John Carroll, made the most of its showing, taking down another tournament title. The Patriots went a perfect 5-0 en route to the championship, raising their dual meet record to 29-1 this season and 251-61-1 since the 2002-03 season.
In winning Saturday, the Patriots rolled over their opponents by lopsided margins of victory, which has been the norm this season. The wins came over Bishop McDevitt, of Pennsylvania, 66-9; Curley, 60-15; Calvert Hall, 63-9; Queen Anne's, 49-21; and Wooton, 52-21, in the finals.
Scott Strappelli (132 pounds); George Weber (145/152); Chris Almony (152/160) and Hunter Ritter (170/182) were all 5-0 to lead the Patriots, while Austin Ross (138/145) and Justin Freeman (138/145) both went 3-0. Andy Milner (106) and Philip Venanazi (145) were also unbeaten, each going 2-0.
CJ Skokowski (106); Devin Davis (126); Mark Pickett (120); and Dan Kelble (195/220) were 4-1.
Davis celebrated his 100th career win versus Wooton in the final match of the tournament.
Tech finishes 2-2
Host Tech broke even at its own event, posting wins over North East, 36-30, and DuVal, 58-14. The losses came against Perry Hall, 46-30, and Chesapeake, 42-36.
Stephen Sewell, (120) turned in Tech's top performance, finishing 4-0 with two pins. Nathan Cook (who took the SATs in the morning) went 2-0 with one pin at 182.
Andrey Kalwa, 138, was 3-1 with two pins and Aziz Burkhanov was also 3-1 with one pin at 195.
Mike Vega, the Cobras top wrestler at 220, was sick and didn't wrestle.
