ESSEX – The third-seeded C. Milton Wright girls came up short in the 3A North regional softball title game Friday, losing 2-0 to top-seeded host Eastern Technical High School.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings, with neither CMW hurler Morghan Fulton nor Eastern Tech's starter conceding a run. With the game still scoreless in the home half of the sixth, the hosts got to Fulton, scoring twice on a triple, a single and two sacrifice hits.
Trailing by two and down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs, who had managed just two singles in the previous six innings, got leadoff base hit from Caroline Weimer. Jenny Lynch came up next and hit a grounder back to the pitcher, but the Eastern Tech hurler's throw to second sailed into the outfield, putting the tying runs on base. After MacKenzie Fitzgerald's sacrifice hit moved both of her teammates over a base, the host team's pitcher retired Lauren Hufham and Holli Rutkowski in order to seal up the 2-0 win.
In a complete-game effort, Fulton held the hosts to six singles and a triple.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
