Five students from Southampton Middle School suffered minor injuries after their school bus collided with a minivan at Routes 22 and 543 on Thursday afternoon.
The bus, which had 30 students on board, was eastbound on Route 22 just before 3:30 p.m. when it was cut off by a minivan turning left onto Route 543 from Route 22, according to Harford County Sheriff's Office Lt. Bernard Chandler.
Five students were taken by ambulance to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Three had neck injuries, one had a bloody nose and one had a possible concussion.
The mini-van driver also suffered a minor injury and refused treatment, Sheriff's Office Capt. Christopher Swain said.
The other 25 students were taken home, Chandler said. No one else was injured and the intersection was cleared within an hour.
The parents of the injured students were contacted, Harford County Public Schools spokeswoman Teri Kranefeld said via e-mail.
"Communication is currently being sent via phone, email and text to the entire school community to inform all parents of the situation," Kranefeld said. "A spare bus was deployed to the scene and will transport the remainder of the students home as soon as possible."
Three ambulances arrived to handle the situation, according to the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association's Facebook page.
"School administrators, Transportation Supervisors and Pupil Personnel Workers are all on the scene to ensure the safety of our students," Kranefeld said.
