Muse, Tauber lead all turkeys to finish line in Bel Air

Tyler Muse and Elizabeth Tauber each set a swift pace in the 18th annual Turkey Trot 5K in Bel Air on Thanksgiving, stretching out a densely packed field of record size.

Muse finished almost a quarter-mile ahead of the closest of 1,546 other runners over a course that concluded with a one-way stretch on the Ma & Pa Trail. Tauber finished further ahead of the women's field, winning by almost 2 minutes.

The crowd of runners, one-fifth larger than last year's, took 4 minutes to clear the start on Williams Street. By the time the back of the pack reached the electronic starting mat, Muse was one-fourth of the way through the race. The Wilmington University junior from Bel Air finished in 16:10 to win for the third time, 15 seconds faster than last year.

Chris Wagner, a former standout runner at Fallston High School and West Point, finished second in 17:21. Matt Hoerr, a freshman at Salisbury University, was third in 17:38.

Tauber, a record-setter at Towson University in the past year, flew over the course in 18:28. It was her third time to win and the fastest, a minute faster than her previous best.

The runner-up in 20:24 was Kelly Coogan, 33, a former state champ at C. Milton Wright now living in California. Third went to Rebecca Seery of Bel Air, in 21:00.

The race, held in brisk 25-degree weather, was the largest of three put on by the Y of Central Maryland on Thanksgiving Day. The race at the Towson Y drew 1,159, and the one in Westminster, 854.

Age-group winners were: Beverly Goskie (31:18) and Joel Leff (21:25) in 60-69; Janet McAdorey (24:03) and Steve Kudla (20:41) in 50-59; Jennifer Bouffard (21:50) and Jerry Henderson (18:20) in 40-49; Kelly Machala (21:44) and Darren Thompson (18:16) in 30-39; Meghan Hairfield (21:02) and Matt Klaschus (17:40), 20-29; Hannah Palmer (22:21) and Sean Handerhan (17:55), 16-19; Emily Burd (22:03) and Austin Weiss (18:35) in 10-15; Grace Kays (28:25) and Adam Martin (28:18) in under-10.

Bulle Rock Turkey Trot

Alex Loper of Bel Air won the annual Bulle Rock Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving Day in Havre de Grace. Loper, 26, led a field of 348, finishing in 17:17, 12 seconds ahead of Will Hopkins, a John Carroll senior. Third place went to Jon Stewart of Whiteford, a Frostburg University sophomore, in 18:48.

Kay Murner of Annapolis led the women. The 23-year-old Naval Academy grad ran 21:41 to finish 8 seconds ahead of Taylor Miller of Bel Air. Kara Nieberlein of Havre de Grace took third in 23:10.

Age group winners were: Bonnie Hallock (30:56) and David Lovelace (27:10) in over-60; Nancy Hill (25:11) and Ron Keith (21:38) in 50-59; Michele Samuels (23:31) and Maurizio Illiano (19:23) in 40-49; Catherine Watson (25:26) and Matthew Burdette (20:38) in 30-39; Lori Wilson (23:07) and Ted Murner (19:34) in 20-29; Nicki Iacaruso (24:00) and Sam Ackerman (20:26) in 15-19; Madeleine Maurice (25:15) and Ryan Iacaruso (20:09) in 11-14; and Kemper Robinson (25:16) and Jeffrey Leonard (27:42), under-11.

Northern Central Trail Marathon

David Ploskona finished second overall, and Rob Tisch, second among masters in the Northern Central Trail Marathon Saturday in Sparks.

Ploskonka, a John Carroll alumnus, completed the flat 26.2 miles in 2:55:12, about 8 minutes behind winner Patrick O'Rourke of Timonium. Tisch, of Bel Air, finished 21 seconds over the 3-hour mark to place 10th among the 424 finishers.

Rob Baker of Bel Air ran 3:08:47 for fifth in the 40-44 age group. Robert Bell of Bel Air clocked 3:57:10 for third in 60-64. Laurie Bothwell was sixth in women's 40-44 in 3:53:15.

Other Harford finishers (incomplete list) were Keith Burgess, 3:51:53; Scott Kothenbeutel, 3:55:24; and Melissa Mickey, 4:10:06. Phil Anderson continued his string of finishes, his 24th, in 5:36:22.

In races elsewhere

Elizabeth Tauber broke the Towson University indoor school record in the 5,000 meters by 4 seconds Tuesday in the Lid Lifter meet at the Naval Academy. She ran 17:22.76 in placing second. North Harford alum Megan Schott of Mount St. Mary's ran 18:59.64 in seventh.

Also for Towson, Evan Campbell (Fallston) took third in the high jump at 5-3 and Wilhelmina Austin (Edgewood), third in long jump at 17-3 1/2 and sixth in the triple jump at 35-9 3/4.

Esther Buchser of Abingdon finished first in the 65-69 age group in the TCS Annapolis Half Marathon Nov. 23. She ran 2:04:04 to win by 33 minutes. Joe Stevenson of Bel Air was second in the men's 65-69 in 2:08:39.

Donna Lewis of Bel Air won the 60-64 age group in the 8K of the Anthem Richmond Marathon Nov. 16. She ran 38:13 for first among 140 women. In the 26.2-mile race, Brad Roberts of Bel Air ran 4:10:20 to place 22nd in 60-64.

Nellie Budrow, formerly of Aberdeen, won the masters division in the Arlington (Texas) Turkey Trot Nov. 28. Budrow, who moved to Texas this fall, ran 20:51 to win by a 1-second margin and finish seventh among the women.
