Elizabeth Tauber, of Bel Air, opened the new cross-country season at a quick pace, winning the Baltimore Metro Invitational Meet in Towson Aug. 31.

The Towson University junior and John Carroll grad won the race on a 5K course at Goucher College. She finished in 19:15, about 19 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Ashley Seymour of Morgan State.

It was the first Metro Meet win for Tauber, who finished sixth last year and second in 2011, both on the Oregon Ridge course. The Towson women placed four other runners in the top 10 to finish first among six teams with a low score of 22 points.

Lenier Tucker of Edgewood ran his first collegiate race in the men's 5K event. He finished seventh in a field of 46 runners in 17:58 and was the no. 3 finisher for Morgan State. The Bears won the meet with 20 points.

Elsewhere, Collin Hickey (Patterson Mill) was the no. 4 finisher for St. Mary's College in the Seagull Opener in Salisbury Aug. 31. He ran 28:32 over an 8K course, helping his team to fifth place among nine college teams. Matt Hoerr (C.Milton Wright) ran his first collegiate race for Salisbury University, finishing in 29:05.

Charm City Run 20 Miler

Charles Powell II, of Bel Air, led the masters runners and Kevin Hennessey of Bel Air led the 40-44 age group in the Charm City Run 20 Miler on the Northern Central Trail Sunday.

Powell, 47, finished sixth overall among 275 runners in 2:10:42, to lead the masters finishers by two minutes. Hennessey finished 16th in 2:17:35. They followed winner Graham Peck, of Baltimore, 1:56:43, to the finish line at Ashland Marketplace. Megan DiGregorio, of White Marsh, led the women in 2:16:28.

In the men's 50-54 age group, Joe Richardson, of Forest Hill, finished second in 2:33:32, and Zach Huffman, of Abingdon, third in 2:36:20.

Darren Thompson, of Bel Air, placed 10th overall and fourth in 30-39 in 2:14:05. Jeff Burger, of Bel Air, was 14th in 2:17:17, and David Stevenson, of Abingdon, 18th in 2:21:54.

In Races Elsewhere

Ben Muzzelo, 13, and Rachel Muzzelo, 17, of Forest Hill, each placed second in their respective age groups in the Ellicott City Labor Day Classic 10K Sunday. Ben ran 45:20 in the under-16 age group, and Rachel, 57:56 in 16-19. The two were among 364 runners who competed.

Joe Stevenson, of Bel Air, was the runner-up in the 60-64 age group in the Summer's End 5K in Sunday in Dewey Beach, Del. He ran 26:36.

Duane Christy led the 50-59 age group and placed fourth overall in the Judy Johnson 5K in Delaware's Brandywine State Park Aug. 31. He ran 19:58 in the field of 100 finishers.

Several Harford runners were among the 9,850 finishers in the Virginia Beach Rock n' Roll Half Marathon Sunday. The four fastest Harford finishers were Joe Dragunas, 1:43:36, Anna Wasielewski, 1:49:37, Kevin Uleck, 1:53:18, and Frannie Dinatale, 1:57:17.
