Fourteen year old Christina Riggins from Harford Gymnastics Training Center won the silver medal on vault at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Eastern National championships in Battle Creek, Mich., last month.
Riggins, who finished eighth grade at Southampton Middle School earlier this month, posted a score of 9.45, just five hundredths of a point behind Emma Breitbarth from Gold Medal Gymnastics in Huntington, N.Y., who won the gold medal with a score of 9.5.
Riggins and her coach, Ron Lievendag, traveled to Michigan for the competition at Kellogg Arena just two weeks after qualifying for Level 9 nationals by being crowned the Region VII vault champion at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., with a scored of 9.75 on her Yurchenko layout vault. Her vault wowed the crowd and judges as she rotated 720 degrees from take off to landing in a straight body layout position.
Riggins also placed eighth on floor with a 9.35 and seventh all around with a 36.9 at the national competition.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
