Rabies can be a serious concern for pet owners, especially as the weather turns more spring like and pets and their owners may be outside more often and can come in contact with other critters that may be infected with the disease.

Sunday the Harford County Health Department held four Rabies clinics around the county in Whiteford, Abingdon, Bel Air and Havre de Grace. Residents could have their dogs, cats and ferrets vaccinated for just $5 per animal.

According to a health department spokesperson, more than 850 pets were vaccinated.

The Bel Air clinic was held at the Harford County Equestrian Center and was set up in one of the large barns near the main entrance. The clinic was staffed by members of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, health department staff and veterinarians from the Animal Emergency Hospital in Bel Air and Swan Creek Veterinary Clinic in Havre de Grace.

The volunteers checked folks in gathering information about the animal to be vaccinated and filled out the proper paperwork handing out the tags to pet owners and of course taking a moment to show a little love for the pets. The three-hour clinic began around 1 p.m. In the first hour and a half, approximately 90 people had brought in their cats and dogs to be vaccinated.

"The count was 851 [vaccinations] through the first four clinics," Harford health department spokesman Bill Wiseman said Monday. "This number for the first weekend is slightly down from recent years.

Wiseman said the $5 cost, which he called "the lowest anywhere around," remains in place for the second round of clinics that will be held this Sunday, May 4, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at four locations:

• Aberdeen Fire Department, corner of Rogers and Franklin Streets in Aberdeen;

• Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company, 3825 Federal Hill Road in Jarrettsville;

• Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, Route 7 (Philadelphia Road) and Old Mountain Road in Joppa;

• Darlington Volunteer Fire Company, 1209 Castleton Road, near the intersections of Routes 1 and 623, in Darlington.
