HCC theater group to present 'Spelling Bee'

The Phoenix Festival Theater will be presenting "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" June 7-15 at the Chesapeake Theater at Harford Community College.

Show times are at 8 p.m. June 7, 8, 14, and 15 with 3 p.m. performances also planned June 9 and 15.

Directed by Laurie Starkey, the play is based on a book by Rachel Sheinkin, with lyrics and music by William Fin.

A musical comedy with a theme related to overachievers' angst, "Spelling Bee" showcases the experiences of six adolescent outsiders on the throes of puberty, trying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Audience participation adds to the show as the young characters learn that winning doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The show does feature some mature themes.

The show is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Tickets can be purchased on line at or at the Chesapeake Theater; tickets for adults cost $20; for those 17 and younger, the price is $10, an it is also $10 for senior citizen and HCC student tickets.
