The detour for Moores Mill Road in Bel Air between Broadway (Route 1) and the Southampton Circle went into place as scheduled on Wednesday.
That stretch Moores Mill will be closed to through traffic for at least 10 months, as the county straightens, widens and repaves the road, a $2.1 million project.
Bob Thomas, spokesman for county government, said the next couple of weeks will involve setting up by the contractor, after which actual construction work will begin. Comer Construction of Forest Hill is the contractor.
The detour, which affects mainly through traffic, also affects Majors Choice Drive, which is closed off at Moores Mill. People who live along the affected stretch can still get to their homes, as can people traveling to and from Harford Day school and a day care center.
"During construction, the road will be closed to through traffic, but all local residents will retain access to their homes," according to a letter from Jeff Stratmeyer of the county's department of public works. "Ingress and egress to Harford Day School, Heritage Woods Apartments, Child Time Day Care and other businesses will be maintained during construction."
"A detour plan will be implemented for the duration of the project," the letter continued. "Harford County has assigned a construction manager and site inspector who will be at the site on a daily basis to oversee the reconstruction project."
To provide ongoing project updates, the Department of Public Works has set up a Facebook page for the project at http://www.facebook.com/MooresMillRoad. Any questions regarding this project can be directed to Project Engineer Carlos L. Smith 410-638-3509, ext. 1370, firstname.lastname@example.org.
The work that began this week is part of a multi-phased reconstruction of Moores Mill from Route 22 to Route 924 (Rock Spring Road).
Phase II of the project pertains to the section of Moores Mill from Business Route 1 to Maryland Route 924. While Phase II has been designed and the right-of-way acquisition process is nearly complete, a time frame for construction has not been determined, according to a recent county news release.
The reconstruction of the section of Moores Mill Road from Route 22 to the roundabout at Southampton Road was completed a number of years ago and included the replacement of the Southampton Road bridge over Bynum Run.
