Bel Air McDonald's honors top teacher

The McDonald's Family Restaurants of Greater Baltimore honored Christina O'Neill, the Harford County Teacher of the Year, Monday evening at the McDonald's restaurant on Baltimore Pike in Bel Air.

The McDonald's McTeacher of the Year Night provides members of the Bel Air Middle School community and other Harford County residents the opportunity to thank O'Neill for her commitment to education. McDonald's will donate a portion of all sales earned during the event to Bel Air Middle School and surprised O'Neill with several gifts.

In addition, the McDonald's Family Restaurants of Greater Baltimore will also honor six additional Teacher of the Year nominees from counties in the Greater Baltimore area with special "McTeacher" of the Year celebrations. The McDonald's Family Restaurants of Maryland annually honor Maryland's 24 Teachers of the Year as the official sponsor of The Teacher of the Year Annual Cruise and Gala and will present the 2012-2013 Maryland Teacher of the Year winner with an Apple iPad and a $10,000 donation to their school at the Teacher of the Year Gala Oct. 5. McDonald's has served as an official sponsor to the Maryland State Department of Education for more than 25 years.

O'Neill has served as a teacher, reading specialist, and literacy leader with Harford County Public Schools since 1994. She earned a Bachelor's degree in English from The College of Notre Dame in 1993, Masters of Education from Loyola College in 1997, and an administrative certification from Towson University in 2003. Mrs. O'Neill has presented on the district, state and national levels on issues related to leadership, school improvement and state assessment. She has served on the Instructional Leadership and School Improvement Teams. O'Neill advances her profession through classroom interventions and focused literacy.
