Harford County wants to sell a building it owns at 33 Courtland St. to LASOS Inc., which has owned the building next door for the past four years.

LASOS Inc. (Linking All So Others Succeed) is a non-profit that provides adult literacy classes in civics, financial literacy, technology and citizenshhip, as well as at-risk youth mentoring and family literacy programs, for non-English-speaking residents.

The Harford County Council introduced a resolution Tuesday night to sell the adjoining building, which is at the corner of Courtland and Bond streets, to Velez Properties LLC, of 31 Courtland Street, for $217,750.

LASOS' current building was bought by Melynda Velez, of Bel Air, at an auction in 2009.

It was the only building of the three on that block – 29, 31 and 33 – that received an acceptable bid at the time. All three buildings had been declared surplus by the county.

Velez had purchased the original 1,185-square-foot property for $150,000.

She also recently got council permission to apply for a $40,000 state housing and community development grant for LASOS.
