The Bel Air Bobcats girls volleyball team made it 18 wins in a row Wednesday night and, in the process, put itself a win away from the Class 3A North region title.
The Bobcats hosted and swept Hereford, 3-0, in region semifinal action. The scores were 25-21, 25-15 and 25-19.
Celeste Roland, 13 kills, three aces and 11 digs; Tia Williams, 10 kills and three aces; Amanda Rodriguez, five kills and 28 assists; Jackie DeLuise, three kills; and Rien Hachmann, four aces and three digs led the Bobcats to victory.
Tim Markland, Bel Air's head coach, also pointed out that great back row defense from Samantha Liberto and Kendall Daley, who combined for 11 digs and 25 perfect passes, also helped keep the Bobcats undefeated.
Bel Air will host the 3A North championship today (Friday) versus Towson. Match time is 6 p.m.
Panthers beat Eagles
Perryville defeated host Bo Manor, 3-2, Wednesday night to guarantee a return to the Class 1A East region championship.
The Panthers, region champions a year ago, dropped the first game, 16-25, but won game two, 25-20. A 14-25 loss in game three put the Panthers (11-6) on the brink of elimination, but a 25-17 win in game four forced a deciding game five. Perryville won that one, 15-11.
Emily Merklinger showed the way with 11 kills, one pass, three blocks and six digs. Morgan Tennant added three aces, four kills, 15 assists, two passes and 15 digs. Marissa Phillips had four aces, two kills, one assist, 15 passes and 17 digs.
The Panthers will play Friday in the 1A East title game at Snow Hill. Match time is 5 p.m.
Cobras, Mustangs lose
Harford Tech (9-8) lost its region title game bid Wednesday, 3-0, at Rising Sun in 2A East play. The scores were 14-25, 23-25 and 10-25. C. Milton Wright (9-7) lost in 3A North play at Towson, 3-0. No further info was provided for either match.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
