A small handful of teams were in action Wednesday as girls lacrosse teams began regional playoff competition.
Patterson Mill, North Harford and Edgewood each posted wins, while a handful of others had first-round byes. Aberdeen, meanwhile, saw its playoffs put on hold after thunder was heard in the area at Franklin High School. The game was rescheduled for Thursday.
Huskies beat Mariners
Patterson Mill advanced in 1A-2A South, beating host Joppatowne, 15-2, after leading 9-1 at the half.
Patterson Mill (7-8) was led by three players who scored three goals each: Mariel Castronova, Brittie Andrews and Sam Herman.
Allie Poust added a goal and four assists, while Megan Wedekind and Amy Bednarek each had a goal and assist. Kathleen Jacobs, Sarah Alders and Mia Godbey also scored goals, while Gabby Vujanic tallied three assists and EJ Karwatka had two assists.
Joppatowne (3-10) scoring was handled by Christina Miller and Jillian Graul, each with an unassisted goal.
Patterson Mill played two goalies with Erin Dent making three saves in the first half and Abby Smith recording one save in the second.
Joppatowne goalie Felicia Okoye finished with 15 saves.
Patterson Mill will play at Harford Tech on Friday at 4 p.m.
Hawks beat Towson
North Harford (10-2) was a winner in 2A-3A North play, beating visiting Towson, 12-2.
The Hawks' Morgan Knox had the hot hand, scoring five goals and assisting two others. Leah Monticello added three goals and two assists and Emily Clark had a goal and five assists.
The other goals were scored by Katie Clark, Sophie Crowther and Bailey Saneman.
Sophia Buck and Maggie Schneiderer scored for Towson and Hope Lockwood added one assist.
North Harford goalie Hailey Ensor made six saves.
The Hawks will host Lansdowne or Patapsco on Friday at 6 p.m.
Rams beat Rams
Edgewood (9-4) was also a winner in 2A-3A North, rolling over visiting Digital Harbor, 21-5. Edgewood led 15-3.
Kara Andrews, with six goals, paced 11 Edgewood scorers, while Alyssa Rankin scored four. Vonyah Simon and Caitlin Rankin added two goals each and single goals were netted by Rebecca Nunez, Morgan Williams, Abigail Olah, Tavisha Velazquez, Sarah Mahmoud, Allison Bomhardt and Nadiyah Alvi.
Alyssa Rankin added four assists, while Andrews, Megan Poniatowski and Velazquez had one each.
In the goal, Savannah Kerr made three saves and Cidney Bomhardt made one.
Five Harford teams received first-round byes and each will host games Friday.
In 1A -2A South, Havre de Grace will host Elkton at 6 p.m., Fallston will host Rising Sun at 4 p.m. and the Tech hosts Patterson Mill.
In 2A-3A North, top seed C. Milton Wright will host Edgewood at 5 p.m., while in 3A-4A South, Bel Air will host North County at 6 p.m.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
