Patterson Mill, Bel Air girls win at Vern Brown basketball tournament

The third annual Vernon Brown Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament kicked off at Fallston High Wednesday afternoon, and emerging from the first round with victories were the Patterson Mill Huskies and the Bel Air Bobcats.

The eight-team tournament is divided into two divisions, the White and the Orange, each of which features two opening-round contests.

The biggest victory of the first round went to Patterson Mill, which pounded the South River squad, 64-29, in an Orange Division matchup.

With the victory, the Huskies moved on to play Virginia's W.T. Woodson at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Orange Division title game.

The Huskies were led in Wednesday's victory by Qalea Ismail, who scored 17 points.

Samantha Herman scored 11 for the Huskies, while teammate Morgan Golec posted 10 points.

Bel Air by two

The Bel Air Bobcats just barely made it out of Wednesday's first round with a victory, as they edged the Edgewood Rams, 36-34, in a White Division contest.

At the halftime break, the two teams were locked at 13 points apiece.

The game moved to overtime when the fourth quarter expired with the score tied, 32-32. Bel Air outscored Edgewood, 4-2, in the first extra period.

Bel Air was led by Connor Hanley, who put up nine points, while close behind was fellow Bobcat Reni Tsomos, who scored eight.

Edgewood's Jakia Robinson led all scorers with an 11-point effort.

The victory moved Bel Air to Thursday's second round, where they played Perry Hall for the White Division crown at 3 p.m.

With the loss, Edgewood was sent to play Joppatowne at 1 p.m. Thursday in the White Division's consolation game.

Fallston topped

The tournament host Fallston Cougars suffered an opening round defeat Wednesday, losing to W.T. Woodson, 54-33, in an Orange Division contest.

Fallston trailed at halftime, 28-15.

Sam Gasior had nine points for the Cougars in the loss, while teammate Kayla Reilly netted six points. Logan Gasior had five for Fallston.

Fallston moved on to play South River at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Orange Division consolation game.

Joppatowne beaten

The Joppatowne Mariners suffered a 66-20 loss to Perry Hall in the opening round of the tournament's White Division Wednesday.
