One Bel Air couple spent New Year's Eve in the hospital for a very special event: their first baby, and Harford County's first baby of 2013.
A little girl, Hanna Lyn Street, became the first baby born at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in the early hours of the New Year, at 1:38 a.m. on Jan. 1.
The baby was welcomed by Bel Air parents Nicole Smith and Camaron Street, who were waiting to be discharged from Upper Chesapeake Wednesday afternoon.
It was the first baby for 22-year-old Smith, who said her due date had been Jan. 4.
"I am really excited about it. We weren't expecting it," she said from the hospital about her daughter being the county's first baby of 2013. "She was early."
Smith said she and Street thought the 7-pound, 14-ounce Hanna would miss the New Year's milestone.
"We weren't expecting it to be on New Year's. It was something we were joking about, to be at the turn of the year," she said.
She said the labor went "very well" and she was ready to go home.
As the first person of the year to give birth at Upper Chesapeake, Smith received a picture package and a Toys 'R' Us gift package.
Smith said she was "completely ready" to go home and welcome Hanna with all the necessary items of baby-hood. She did not overhear or see other women giving birth at Upper Chesapeake around the same time.
"It's been quiet," she said.
Street, who was by Smith's side for the labor, declined to comment on the special delivery.
