Troopers responded to the accident scene at 6:17 a.m.
Billy Joe Yingling, 38, of Conowingo, was driving his 2001 Chevrolet van east on Route 40 when he crashed into the rear of a 1999 Mack truck, driven by George Vann Eley Jr., of Bel Air, at the intersection with Westshore Drive.
Eley was making a left turn when Mr. Yingling's vehicle struck his truck, according to a State Police news release.
A third vehicle, a 2013 Ford pickup truck driven by William Anthony Brooks, collided with the rear end of Mr. Yingling's van and the van turned over.
Brooks' truck left the road, according to the news release.
Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company personnel also responded to the accident, and members of the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and the Aberdeen Fire Department provided support, Abingdon Fire Chief Monti Arrington said.
Arrington said the van driver, Mr. Yingling, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other drivers did not need to be taken to the hospital for treatment, the fire chief said.
The lanes for eastbound traffic on Route 40 were shut down for several hours as emergency crews worked.
The accident remained under investigation by the State Police Thursday, but officials stated that alcohol did not "appear to be a contributing factor," according to the news release.
