SARC, a non-profit in Harford County providing hope and resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking, received a proclamation from the Harford County Council recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The proclamation was issued by Billy Boniface and the Harford County Council in hopes to increase public awareness about domestic violence. The proclamation states the long-term personal and societal effects of domestic violence, which is a largely under-reported crime. It is important to raise awareness of domestic violence because it affects those of every socioeconomic class and "societal indifference" is pronounced to be a factor in the continuation of domestic violence. By issuing this proclamation, the Harford County Council sought to increase awareness and prevent crimes that "violate(s) an individual's privacy, dignity, security and humanity."
Another goal of the proclamation is to point victims to resources such as SARC, which has served the Harford County community for 35 years by offering victims and survivors of domestic violence various services: counseling, crisis intervention, a 28-bed safehouse, hospital companions, a 24-hour helpline, a food pantry, legal advocacy and representation as well as community outreach and trainings. These programs are available to SARC clients free of charge. SARC serves men, women and children who have been affected by domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse or stalking.
Lastly, the proclamation asserts October to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which has been annually recognized for the past 26 years, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
