April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and throughout the month CASA of Harford County is putting a focus making children's healthy development a community priority.

"When parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources to provide children with safe, stable, nurturing, and healthy environments, we can prevent abuse and neglect before they occur," CASA noted in a press release. CASA is short for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children.

As part of the highlighting effort, CASA is planning a candlelight vigil outside of the Harford County Circuit Courthouse, facing Main Street, on Wednesday, April 17th at 7:30 p.m. On display will be a pinwheel garden "planted" by CASA of Harford County staff and volunteers.

"The blue pinwheel has become a national symbol for Child Abuse Prevention month. It represents the innocence and playfulness that all children deserve," CASA Director Ross DiEdoardo said in a press release. He added: "This is our first Candlelight Vigil in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month. We hope to make this an annual event to continue to bring awareness to the issue of child safety and protection."

The event will feature speakers, musical selections by the Susquehanna Singers and the lighting of the candles. All in the community are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

CASA of Harford County has been in existence since 1995. It is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are in the foster care and court system. CASA Volunteers monitor all aspects of their case and report to the court, making recommendations for what they feel is in the child's best interest.
