Bel Air man killed in crash near Conowingo Dam Sunday

A Bel Air man was killed in a single car accident near Conowingo Dam in Cecil County early Sunday morning, Maryland State Police said.

Wade Knight Walter, 38, was killed at the intersection of Route 222 and Route 1 at 3 a.m. Sunday, Sgt. Jim Pruski of the North East Barrack said Monday morning.

A street address for the victim was not immediately available.

Mr. Walter was traveling north on Route 222 in a 2006 Pontiac GTO when he failed to slow down at a stop sign at Route 1 just north of the dam, Pruski said.

The car crashed at a concrete barrier near the dam and overturned several times, ejecting Mr. Walter, Pruski said.

Mr. Walter was pronounced dead at the scene. Route 1 was closed for three hours as State Police investigated, Pruski said.

No other passengers were in the vehicle. According to Pruski, alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor in the accident.

Mr. Walter was born in Aberdeen and had been in the National Guard, according to his obituary from McComas Funeral Home.

He worked as a heavy-equipment technician, belonged to Mountain Christian Church, was an avid reader and liked remote control airplanes, building cars and drag racing.

Visitation for Mr. Walter will be at McComas Funeral Home in Bel Air from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Services will be at the church in Joppa on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul E. Austin officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church Cemetery in Bel Air.
