Empty Harford school bus hit Monday afternoon

An empty Harford County Public Schools bus was in an accident in Bel Air on Monday afternoon after dropping children off on the first day of school, schools spokeswoman Teri Kranefeld said.

The crash was reported on Route 24 near Marketplace Drive at 4:25 p.m., according to the police report.

"It has been reported by the HCPS Transportation Department that the bus was rear-ended by a pick-up truck," Kranefeld said. "The bus had just completed its run dropping off students from Abingdon Elementary School."

"There were no students on board at the time of the accident. The driver and attendant were not injured," Kranefeld said.

The pickup driver had swerved to avoid hitting a third vehicle, but hit it anyway, and continued moving until it hit the school bus, according to the report.

All vehicles were damaged, according to the report.
