With the Fallston boys trailing by two and the final seconds of Friday's basketball contest at Joppatowne ticking away, the Cougars' Gus Makres sank a three-point shot just before the buzzer sounded to hand his team a 63-62 victory over the host-team Mariners.
Prior to the last-second defeat Friday, Joppatowne (8-3 overall) had not been beaten in four previous Chesapeake (upper) Division games. Fallston (7-6 overall), on the other hand, came into the contest with a 1-2 mark against upper-division foes.
Fallston's white knight, Makres, finished the game with 15 points.
Ben Lodanski had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars, while teammate Kyle Tyree posted 16 points and eight rebounds.
Joppatowne's leading offensive force was Gary Blackston, who posted a game-best 21 points, while also registering five rebounds and six steals.
Sir Nicolas Phillips had 17 points, three steals and a team-high 14 rebounds in the loss, while fellow Mariner Khalil Gore had 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Jermaine Head Jr. put up nine points, five rebounds, five steals and led the Mariners in assists with 10. Rashaad Gore posted five points, six rebounds and one block.
Aberdeen drops C. Milton Wright
The Aberdeen Eagles (6-2 overall, 4-1 Chesapeake) took a big road victory on Friday night, handing the C. Milton Wright Mustangs (5-5 overall, 2-3 Chesapeake) a 61-55 defeat.
Aberdeen led at halftime, 24-20.
Jaleel Gibson scored 17 points to pace the Aberdeen offense, and Tyril Rozier contributed 11 points to the winning tally. Darryn Garner netted nine points, and teammate Lavell McCullers came through with eight points. Aberdeen's Ben Richardson came through with seven points.
CMW's Mychal Stefanides led all scorers with a 25-point effort. Will Hazelton led the Mustangs in assists with six and steals with three. Corey Bays had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Jamal Worthington scored 11 points.
Havre de Grace over Bo Manor
The Havre de Grace took a long trip into Cecil County on Friday night, but it proved to be worth it, as they came back home later with a 56-38 Susquehanna (lower) Division win over the Bo Manor Eagles.
The win put Havre de Grace at 3-6 overall, and 3-2 against lower-division opponents.
Jordan Hawthorne had 15 points and five steals, while Shawn Whittaker posted 12 points. Geno Nappi helped the winning side with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Zayrron Blake had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Bel Air knocks off Harford Tech
Bel Air took a home court victory over Harford Tech Friday, and very nearly touched the 100-point barrier, with the Bobcats dispatching the visiting Cobras, 94-65.
The win put Bel Air at 6-4 overall and 5-0 in the Susquehanna Division. Harford Tech fell to 5-4 on the season, and 2-2 in lower-division play.
Following a 29-point outburst in the second quarter, Bel Air went into halftime with a 54-36 advantage.
Jahari Carmichael had 22 points and four assists for the Bobcats, while Tom Keller posted 18 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Morrissey notched 14 points and nine rebounds, while C.J. Simmons had 12 points and six assists. Bel Air's John Gallina had 10 points.
