What to watch for this scholastic baseball season

Here's how Harford County's varsity baseball teams look as the season gets started.

Aberdeen

Head coach: Tim Lindecamp (first season)

2012 record: 4-14

Key returning players: Tyler Maughan, Sr. (2B, OF); Travis Hubler, Sr. (P, SS)

Key newcomers: Andrew Brndjar, Fr. (P, IF); Kyle Salmons, So. (3B); Owen Smith, So. (C)

Outlook: "We are a very young team," first-year head coach Tim Lindecamp said of the 2013 Eagles, who are coming off a tough 2012 campaign. "On offense, we will need to manufacture runs to stay competitive."

Bel Air

Head coach: John Swanson (12th season)

2012 record: 9-12

Key returning players: Sam Foss, Sr.; Nick Loiodice, Jr. (2B); Tyler Norcross, Sr. (SS); Richard Rivera, Sr. (DH)

Outlook: The Bobcats will be neck-deep in the Chesapeake (upper) Division battle with C. Milton Wright, North Harford, Patterson Mill and Fallston. "Our expectations for the season are to compete at a high level, and give ourselves an opportunity to win every game," veteran head coach John Swanson said. "As the season unfolds, time will tell how successful we are."

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Joe Stetka (second season)

2012 record: 12-10

Key returning players: Mason Benson, Jr. (C, IF); Drew Buckley, Sr. (OF); Chase Demars, Jr. (P, SS); Cam Horner, Sr. (2B); Jake Labe, Sr. (P, 1B); Ryan Lorenzo, Sr. (IF); Colin Miller, Jr. (C, 1B); Matt Phillips, Sr. (P, OF); Ricky Scheeler, Sr. (3B); Bryce Schultz, Sr. (P, 1B); Dakota Stern, Jr. (OF, IF); Mike Vecchio, Sr. (OF, C); Justin Wiederman, Sr. (OF)

Key newcomers: Pete Denardi, So. (C, IF); Matt Henigan, Jr. (P, OF); Ray Kimball, Jr. (P); Matt Mancino, Jr. (SS, 2B); Brett Schatz, Jr. (2B); Jeremy Stewart, Jr. (P, 1B); Nick Vecchio, Jr. (OF)

Outlook: "Defense and pitching will be strong points for us," head coach Joe Stetka said. "We do have above-average team speed, and we have some good hitters with some power. Our pitching is shaping up, and that's key for us. Defensively, we're pretty tight up the middle. We have a ball club that has some pop in its bats, but most of all we have solid contact hitters."

Edgewood

2012 record: 7-12

Key returning players: Kaliel Barmer, Jr. (C); Jose Figueroa, Sr. (P, 3B); Trey Hathaway, Sr. (SS); Detrick Matthews, Sr. (P, 3B, OF)

Key newcomers: Noah Appel, Jr. (C, P); Dave Dzambasow, Fr. (IF, P); Tyler Hoffman, Fr. (OF); Nick Logue, Fr. (IF, P)

Outlook: "We have some talent this year," head coach Mike Friskey said. "Success will be completely dependent on worth ethic, hustle, and heart for these Rams."

Fallston

Head coach: Mark Puckett (17th season)

2012 record: 4-16

Key returning players: Wyatt Alexander, Sr. (SS); Bryan Jirsa, Sr. (OF); Mike Morais, Sr. (C); Austin Rutkowski, Jr. (OF); Kyle Tyree, Jr. (P, 1B); Brendan Weinhold, So. (P, 1B)

Key newcomers: Ryan Fisher, Jr. (3B); Luke Glover, Jr. (2B, SS)

Outlook: The Cougars had a rough season in 2012, going 2-10 in the Chesapeake Division, but still managed to avoid being demoted to the Susquehanna (lower) Division. "We are a young team this year," head coach Mark Puckett said. "Our goal is to be competitive in UCBAC games."

Harford Tech

Outlook: "We expect to prepare ourselves for every situation, and put ourselves in a position to compete on a daily basis," head coach Paul Daniele said. "Our goals are always the same: UCBAC championship, regional championship, state championship. We return six starters from last year's squad, so expectations are very high."

Havre de Grace

Head coach: Chad Blevins

2012 record: 7-14

Key returning players: N/A

Key newcomers: N/A

Outlook: The Havre de Grace coaching staff did not supply information for this preview

John Carroll

2012 record: 6-14

Key returning players: J.C. Clayton, Sr.; Nick Flayhart, Jr.; Tim Kutcher, So.; Matt McGee, So.; Mark Michael, Jr.; Connor Reeves, Jr.; Matt Ryan, Sr.;

Key newcomers: N/A

Outlook: "We are very excited about this season," head coach Steve Teter said. "We struggled last year with mostly sophomores and freshmen forced to play more than we would have liked. With the experience and hard work over the last year, we should be much improved. We still play in the toughest league in the state, so we will be challenged every game. I think we will surprise some people this year. Our goal this year is to reach the playoffs, but we are happy about the direction of the program. We have put a lot of time and effort into improving the facilities at John Carroll and we look forward to a very bright future."

Joppatowne

Head coach: Robert Diana

2012 record: 0-18

Key returning players: N/A

Key newcomers: N/A

Outlook: The Joppatowne coaching staff did not supply information for this preview

North Harford

Head coach: Tim Larrimore (24th season)

2012 record: 23-3

Key returning players: Austin Reitz, Sr. (P); Brian Shaffer, Jr. (P, SS); Logan Smith, Sr. (C)

Key newcomers: Scott Angstadt, So. (P, OF); Sean Bowling, So. (IF); Richie Greene, Jr. (IF); Nic Hammer, Jr. (3B, P)

Outlook: Last year's Class 3A state runner up, North Harford lost a load of talent to graduation. "We are the definition of rebuilding after losing 13 Seniors and nine starters from last season's state finalist team," head coach Tim Larrimore said. "We have some pitching depth, but will rely heavily on unproven varsity players. We are young, starting two sophomores and several juniors. We have a very athletic and quick team, which is a change from the power team we had the past three seasons."

Patterson Mill

Head coach: Matt Roseland (fifth season)

2012 record: 19-5

Key returning players: James Andrew, Jr. (P, OF, DH); Zach Dorn, Sr. (OF); Griffin Marge, Jr. (1B); Blaine Sheesley, Sr. (P); J.T. Tipton, Jr. (SS)

Key newcomers: Austin Abild, Jr. (SS); Bill Benson, So. (3B, 2B); Jacob Buher, Jr. (OF); Matt Larson, Jr. (3B, OF); Alex Peters, Jr. (P);

Outlook: 'We look to our seniors to step in and replace a large group that we lost to last year's graduation," head coach Matt Roseland said. "Last year was a time for them to learn and grow, and we hope they will rise to the occasion this spring. We had terrific attendance all winter long in our off-season lifting program, and we are excited to get things started in 2013."
