The North Harford Hawks and Rising Sun Tigers were supposed to play baseball in Rising Sun Monday. Because of sloppy field conditions, the game was moved to the North Harford field in Pylesville.
After nine innings and more than three hours, the UCBAC Chesapeake (upper) Division game was halted by darkness in a 7-7 tie.
Brian Shaffer struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings and added a home run and two singles to lead the Hawks on the mound and at the plate. Brandon Plummer pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Josh Garcia and Nic Hammer each hit doubles for the Hawks, who outhit the Tigers, 11-9. The Hawks, however, committed six errors in the field.
Also Monday, Fallston lost at Elkton, 2-1, in UCBAC Chesapeake Division play. Stats were not provided.
Mustangs beat rain, Indians
On Friday, with everyone else in Harford County practicing inside because of bad weather and poor field conditions, the C. Milton Wright Mustangs managed to get in a game, and they made the most of it by beating the host-team North East Indians, 14-8.
The victory came 24 hours after a tough, eight-inning loss to Rising Sun.
"This was a good win to pick up, especially after yesterday's game," CMW head coach Joe Stetka said. "The bats were working today, and we had some really tremendous defensive plays, too."
Colin Miller had the hot bat for the Mustangs, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored.
"Colin is really going to have a great year if he keeps hitting like he has been," Stetka said. "He's 10-for-16 so far, and I think he's going to get better as the season moves on."
The Mustangs Jeremy Stewart was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Chase DeMars was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Mike Nolte went 2-for-4 and Dakota Stern had two singles and scored two runs.
Mustang starter Danny Phillips worked through four innings to pick up the win.
CMW topped in extras
On Thursday, the Mustangs lost, 6-5 in eight innings, on their home field to Rising Sun.
"Rising Sun has a really good team," Stetka said. "If we'd had a few more timely hits, or had a few other things go right for us, it would have been a different game."
DeMars went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and one RBI, while Miller was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and one run scored. Nolte went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly RBI and Tom Chaiscione rapped out an RBI triple.
North Harford edges Tech
North Harford emerged from its Thursday baseball matchup with a one-run victory, defeating host Harford Tech, 5-4.
North Harford scored twice in the opening inning, then posted one run in the second, third and fifth innings to run up a 5-0 lead. Harford Tech scrambled back to within one in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run rally, but the visitors closed the door before the Cobras could tie the game.
