Harford runners finish up front in Baltimore St. Patrick's Day 5K

Harford runners captured four age-group wins Sunday in the Under Armour Kelly St. Patrick's Day 5K, in which 4,529 raced down Charles Street in Baltimore.

Kenny Connelly of Bel Air finished first among men 16 to 19, and Sara Decker of Havre de Grace took first among women 16 to 19.

Connelly, a freshman at Denison University of Ohio, ran 17:08 to finish 34 seconds ahead of Ben Nardi of Forest Hill, the runner-up. Decker, a senior at Aberdeen High School, ran 20:29 and placed 16th overall among the women.

Jennifer Drabo of Abingdon, finished first in 40-44. She ran 21:57 and was 32nd overall. Noah Jahnigen led the youngest age group, under-11. The 9-year-old from Bel Air was timed in 22:49.

Jerry Henderson of Bel Air narrowly missed a win in the 50-54 age group. He ran 18:31, reaching the finish 1 second behind the winner. Tyler Muse of Bel Air was seventh overall in 16:02. He placed fourth in the 20-29 age group.

Other top age-group finishes by Harford runners: William Tikiob, Jarrettsville, third in 11-15 in 18:59; Casey Moore, Havre de Grace, seventh in 16-19 in 19:20; Mark Wohlfort, Bel Air, eighth in 40-44 in 19:31; Greg Butterworth, Bel Air, fifth in 50-54 in 21:14; Mark Hall, Bel Air, sixth in 55-59 in 22:40; and Rhonda Utz, Forest Hill, fourth in 55-59 in 24:32.

Rock 'n' Roll D.C. Marathon

It was 26 degrees when 16,900 runners – 65 from Harford County – convened on Constitution Avenue Saturday for the start of the three races of the Rock 'n' Roll D.C. Marathon.

In the first race, Stephen Ripley of Bel Air completed the 26.2 miles to RFK Stadium in 3:20:17, placing fifth among 173 men in the 45-49 age group. Shelley Ripley finished 22nd among women 40 to 44 in 4:06:11.

Jim Cole of White Hall ran 3:46:12 to place 11th among 76 runners in 55-59. His performance was listed as "lead singer" in keeping with the rock and roll theme.

David Stevenson, in his second marathon in a week, finished 12th in 40-44 in 3:26:22. Daniel Zubrowksi of Abingdon ran 3:36:53 and his brother, Jonathan, 3:37:33; Collen Bedula, Bel Air, 3:51:00 and her sister, Karen, 3:51:05. Katherine Bugg, Aberdeen, ran 4:02:37; Michael Kolar, Abingdon, 4:24:38; and Danielle Zhu, Abingdon, 4:53:27.

In the half marathon, with 13,016 finishers, Zach Valentine of Aberdeen Proving Ground placed eighth in the 30-34 age group in 1:20:04. Louise Valentine was 32nd in 30-34 in 1:36:37.

Others under 1:50 in the half-marathon were Erin Angelini, Bel Air, 1:46:21; Stacy Ward, Bel Air, 1:47:10; Sara Miller, Bel Air, 1:47:26; Melissa Morland, Bel Air, 1:48:42; and Yasmyne Hilliard, Edgewood, 1:48:57.

In other races

Delaney Smith, 17, of Havre de Grace led the under-20 women in the annual Get Pumped for Pets 10K in Chester Sunday. She ran 55:26. Robert Smith placed third in 50-59 in 56:53.

Duane Christy of Havre de Grace won the 50-59 age group by almost a minute in the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in Milton, Del., Sunday. He was 12th among 375 in 20:48. Michael Reed of Edgewood placed eighth in 40-49 in 24:43.

Maureen Leiss of Forest Hill took third place among 123 women in the 40-49 age group in the Ocean City St. Patrick's Day Boardwalk 5K Sunday. She finished in 25:09. Also in the field of 872, Robert Lambert of Bel Air ran 21:59 for sixth in 40-49.
