Harford Christian, Harford Tech boys win bracket championships at Salisbury basketball tourney

Boys basketball teams from Harford Tech and Harford Christian both won bracket championships this week at the Governor’s Challenge Tournament contested in Salisbury.

Harford Christian won the Bracket 5 championship and senior guard Derreck Orr set a tourney record in the process.

In Tuesday’s opener, Harford Christian battled Mardela down to the wire before winning, 75-71.

Orr was the story, scoring 44 points, the most ever by any player in a single game ever played in the tournament. Orr’s line was 13-of-19 field goals made, including 5-of-6 from three point land. Orr also made 13-of-17 free throws to produce the 44 points.

Michael Drew added 15 points in the win, while Darin Miller added seven points and seven rebounds. Nate Griffin added a team-best eight rebounds.

In Wednesday’s final, Orr didn’t score another record amount of points, but his 26 points did help the Eagles past Salisbury School, 49-43. Orr also grabbed six rebounds.

Miller contributed 10 points and seven boards, while Griffin added nine points and seven rebounds.

Cobras win title, too

Tech won the Salisbury Physical Therapy Bracket with wins over James M. Bennett and Archbishop Curley.

Tech opened play Tuesfay, beating James M. Bennett, 68-65. The Cobras trailed at the half, 42-38.

Laday Cooper led the Cobras with 17 points and Jordan Bright added 12 points and six rebounds. Dashawn Lucas added 14 points and six rebounds.

In Wednesday’s final, Tech edged Curley, 59-57 for the tile, the second straight for the Cobras.

Tech trailed by 14 points in the second quarter, but cut the deficit down to seven, 38-31, at half.

Bright had 13 points and eight rebounds and Anthony Ifeacho had 15 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Dangerfield added nine points and nine assists.

Mariners fall

Joppatowne lost at Laurel on Wednesday,. 50-49.

Jalen Willis had 14 points, 10 assists, 10 steals and seven rebounds. Montrell Horsey added 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

Mustangs lose, too

C. Milton Wright lost to host Glen Burnie, 74-71, Wednesday in the Glen Burnie Holiday Tournament.

The Mustangs trailed at the half, 38-36.

Imran Husain led the Mustangs with 20 points and three assists. Jalen Jackson added 13 points.

Manchester Valley Tournament

Patterson Mill and Fallston both played at Manchester Valley and both were beaten.

Patterson Mill fell to Hereford, 52-47, while Fallston lost to host Manchester Valley, 57-55.

In Fallston’s loss, the Cougars fell behind big in the first quarter. The Cougars battled back to within two and had an open look for three at the buzzer, but it didn’t go down.

Ryan Cassedy scored 20 points to pace four Cougars in doubles. Others scoring were Ethan Sommer, 12; Collin Hoerr, 13; and Cameron Conroy, 10.
