Sunny Day Cafe has been named Bel Air's 2016 Business of the Year and Independent Brewing Company has been recognized for its building rehabilitation project.
The honors were announced when the Town of Bel Air government and the Bel Air Economic & Community Development Commission held the annual Business of the Year and Archer-Bull Design Awards banquet on Thursday evening at Rockfield Manor.
Located at 101 S. Main St., Sunny Day Cafe is one of Harford County's most popular breakfast and luncheon spots. Owner Lauri Orfanidis and her family were on hand to receive the coveted award, given by the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners.
The award is bestowed upon the business and individuals that make the most significant contributions over time and during the year, in terms of volunteer service and community development in Bel Air, according to Bel Air Economic Development Director Trish Heidenreich.
The Economic & Community Development Commission presented the Archer-Bull Award to Independent Brewing Company, owned by Philip Rhudy and business partner Harry O'Neill. The award is named after prominent 19th century Bel Air architect George Archer and master builder Jacob Bull.
Independent Brewing's owners received the award for overall design excellence for their building rehabilitation project at 418 N. Main St. They turned a former auto repair shop into the business district's first craft brewery and taproom.
Silver Hall Contracting Company of Baldwin and Architectural Design Works, with offices in Bel Air and Towson, were also acknowledged for their work as builder and architect, respectively, on the project.
