Way to go, Huskies [Editorial]

How historic is Patterson Mill's accomplishment?

When Patterson Mill rolled over Southern-Garrett, 59-43, at Towson University Saturday to win the Class 1A girls state basketball championship, the Huskies made history.

Congratulations to Patterson Mill for winning the 2017 state championship that made them the only Harford County girls team to win three state titles.

The Huskies also won state championships in 2014 and 2015. The only blemish in what could've been a four-year run was last year's loss to Forestville in the state semifinals.

Congratulations also to Holly Ismail, Patterson Mill's coach, and the only one in the history of Harford County basketball to lead a team to three state championships.

How historic is Patterson Mill's accomplishment? Aberdeen's boys are the only other Harford County high school team with three state basketball championships. The Eagles won their titles in three different eras - 1951, 1976 and 2000 - under three different coaches.

Joppatowne's boys had consecutive championships in 1990 and 1991. Edgewood won state titles in 1975 and 1997. C. Milton Wright won its only title a year ago and North Harford won one in 1962.

As for girls basketball, Patterson Mill's third state championship puts them one step beyond all the others. As incredible as it may seem, it was 2009 when Fallston won Harford County's first girls state basketball championship.

Starting with that championship, Harford County girls have won eight state titles in the past nine years, including 2010 when Fallston won its second straight and Joppatowne won its only one, giving Harford County two of the four championships that year. Of the last 36 state girls basketball championships, Harford County girls have won eight.

Aberdeen's girls won state championships in 2012 and 2013.

So, for the girls, Aberdeen and Fallston had back-to-back great seasons and Patterson Mill just put together its third in four years.

The point is simple: Harford County high schools have had great basketball teams with state championships dating to at least 1951. But no school has accomplished what Patterson Mill did.

It's been a remarkable time for Patterson Mill girls basketball and we add our kudos to all the others the Huskies have received in the past week.
