Marleigh Skelton, a student at Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School, received a student achievement award from the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners at the most recent town meeting on Dec. 18.

Marleigh's certificate, presented to her by Mayor Susan Burdette, reads in part:

"Marleigh Skelton is a model student and citizen of the Homestead-Wakefield Elementary Scholl community. She is a young lady who is driven to excel at high levels, is respected by her peers and adults and is a kind to all."

"Marleigh accepts challenges and responsibilities with open arms," the certificate continues. "She seems to gravitate to those who are less fortunate or who need help."

Burdette said Marleigh has been recognized as a model student through her school's Character Education Program. Her volunteer work, community activities and extracurricular activities "are vast," according to her certificate.

Marleigh's family joined her for the award ceremony, as did Homestead-Wakefield Principal Chris Cook.
