The Little Gunpowder 50K, a little ultra-marathon race in Joppa on Saturday, was a Thompson-led event. Darren Thompson of Bel Air won the men's race. Heather Thompson of Bel Air (no relation) won the women's. They led the way over a 31-mile course that began and ended at Jerusalem Mill and included a half-dozen stream crossings.

The race, a local, low-key alternative to the 50th annual JFK 50 miler in Western Maryland on the same day, drew a field of 25.

Darren Thompson led by almost 2 miles when he reached the finish line in 4 hours, 18 minutes. Kevin Hennessey of Bel Air, who had completed a 50-miler one week earlier, finished second in 4:35. Rob Tisch of Bel Air was third in 4:40 and Jack Anderson of Baltimore, fourth in 4:49.

Heather Thompson placed ninth overall. Timed in 5:31, she led women's runner-up Kat Brady of Delta, Pa., by about 2 miles at the finish. Brady ran 5:55. Stacy Gautsch of East Berlin, Pa., was third and Suk Geesey of Red Lion, Pa., fourth, both timed in 6:12. Jackie Shugart of Forest Hill, and Kath Zielenski of Bel Air, ran 7:02 in a tie for fifth.

Others in the top 10 were Dave Stevenson, 5:16; Saul Duarte, 5:16; Bob Dombrowski, 5:22; Danny McDonnell, 5:32; Rick Thompson, 5:49; and Tom Svoboda, 6:05.

Full Belly 5K

Ethan Brito won the men's race and Lori Olszewski, the women's in the Full Belly 5K, a race on the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air Saturday.

Brito, a Bel Air High School junior, ran 19:18 over a course longer than 5K. He finished 16 seconds ahead of Jay Vogel of Baltimore. Jerry Henderson, 48, of Bel Air, finished third in 19:58.

Dan Lekites, a Fallston High School junior, was fourth among the 114 finishers in 20:54. Trent Seawell of Forest Hill took fifth in 20:56.

Olszewski, 50, ran 25:31 to win the women's race by 39 seconds over Brenda Walker of Havre de Grace. Bel Air High School students Megan Kotrla and Hailey Snyder finished third and fourth, respectively, in 26:44 and 26:58. Donna Smucker of Bel Air was fifth in 27:21.

Zoo Zoom 8K

Calen Dowley of Pylesville raced to a third-place finish in a field of 1,089 in the Zoo Zoom 8K at the Baltimore Zoo Sunday.

The North Harford High School senior completed the 4.97-mile course in 31:04 behind winner Conor Phelan of Rochester, N.Y., 28:10.

Katie Wirth of Abingdon finished 10th in the women's field in 36:57. Emily League, 16, of Bel Air, led the women's under-20 age group in 38:28. Joel Leff of Havre de Grace led the men's 65-69 age group in 36:55.

Winters Run 5 Miler

Runners endured 25-degree cold and a stiff headwind on the first half of the course in the RASAC Winters Run 5 Miler Sunday.

Despite the harsh conditions, Juantonio Rivera bettered the course record by 2 minutes in 30:53. Kirk Ingold finished second in 33:48; Rob Stevenson, third, 34:33; and Mike Woodward, fourth, 35:14.

Jennifer Perkovich won the women's race in 40:10, finishing 2:34 ahead of Katie Streib. Cathy Bartholomew was third in 42:53, and Tina Starkey, fourth in 48:21.

In other races

Stephen Cheng of Havre de Grace was among the 857 finishers of the 50th annual JFK 50 Miler in Western Maryland Saturday. He finished in 10 hours, 53 minutes.

Five Harford runners were finishers in the Stone Hill 50 Miler in Gaithersburg Nov. 17. Kevin Hennessey placed seventh in the field of 252 in 7:51:31. Casey Fisher ran 9:25:28; Bart Rein, 10:31:50; David Wood, 11:36:02; and Robert Smoot, 13:56:11.

Jeff Burger won the RASAC Lost Pond 4.6-miler by 2 seconds on the foggy morning of Nov. 17. He finished in 35:18, and runner-up Jerry Henderson, in 35:20. John Burghardt took third in 37:48, and Allen McMillin, fourth in 38:52. Lydia Johnson led the women in 56:00, with Mary Ann Grafton, Robbie Reeves, and Bobi Jean McFadden close behind.
