The Harford County Sheriff's Office is investigating the non-fatal shooting of an Edgewood man late Monday afternoon.
Law enforcement officers responded to the 1800 block of Eloise Lane near the basketball court shortly after 4:20 p.m. regarding a report of a group of people fighting, according to the Sheriff's Office and later found a 47-year-old man who had been shot in his ankle, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins said the injury to the victim, Milton Smith, was "non-life threatening," and he was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air by the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.
In a follow up statement e-mailed to the media Monday morning, Hopkins said when deputies arrived at the basketball court they did not observe anyone fighting.
"Deputies noticed, however, several patches of blood located in the roadway on Brookside Drive but no victim was located," Hopkins wrote. "The area was roped off by crime scene tape and a perimeter was set up. Deputies canvassed the area searching for a victim."
According to Hopkins, neighbors in the area advised there was a group of subjects fighting and then gunshots were heard.
"Witnesses said they heard someone say they had been shot," Hopkins continued. "Detectives were interviewing additional witnesses when they observed more blood to the rear of 1856 Eloise Lane. Detectives entered the home and found the victim identified as Milton Oswald Smith, 47, lying in a bed in the basement suffering from a gunshot wound to his left ankle."
"The victim was not cooperative with police," Hopkins added.
Smith's injuries were not life threatening and the investigation is continuing, Hopkins said.
