Getting back in gear after all the snow [Column]

The Cecil County Holly Tree, off Jackson Station Road east of Perryville, was lighted for the season on Saturday, Dec. 7, as the Perryville High School Band played for the visitors. Earlier that day, I watched as Port Deposit's Christmas tree was set up in the town square and decorated as well.

There were cancellations galore due to last Sunday's snowfall! Good Shepherd Church's annual pre-Christmas service, "Lessons and Carols" at St. Agnes Church in Rising Sun was canceled and not rescheduled. Cecil County Public Schools were closed Monday which in turn canceled bingos, like the Rising Sun Monday Morning Bingo at McDonald's.

Congratulations to Charlotte and John Lowe, Rising Sun, as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on December 7.

Dr. Mel Canlas, Havre de Grace, enjoyed birthday greetings on Dec. 8 and Charlotte Lowe, Rising Sun, added a year to her age on Dec. 9.

Much sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Leonard Rothlingshofer, Perryville, as he passed away at Citizens Care Center on Dec. 1 after a long illness. My husband served under Maj. Rothlingshofer in the 1729th Maintenance Battalion, Havre de Grace.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Water Witch Fire Company hosted the quarterly countywide auxiliary dinner meeting on Dec. 11 at the Port Deposit VFW Post 8185. Representatives from six fire companies attended. The ladies enjoyed a Christmas dinner of ham and turkey, singing by Victorian Carolers, raffles, and a visit by Santa.

The Museum Association for the Bainbridge Museum, 6 S. Main Street, hopes to keep the museum open each weekend from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter instead of closing for December through March, weather permitting!

The St. Patrick's Chapel Historical Society announced that a holiday Mass would be celebrated at St. Patrick's Chapel, Pilottown (Conowingo), at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec.14. Weather permitting, refreshments will be served after the Mass. Call Bill at 410-658-4378 for info or directions.

Penny Barr is hosting a "Christmas High Tea on the Farm" event at Rolling Hills Ranch on Saturday, Dec. 14. There will be two seatings, one at 11 a.m. and the second one at 2 p.m. The cost is $25 per person and reservations can be made by calling Penny at 443-553-1441. Rolling Hills Ranch is at 33 Rolling Hills Ranch Road, Port. Seating is limited.

The Perryville and Port Deposit Lions Clubs will sponsor Pictures with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 21 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Perryville Outlets. The pictures will cost $5 each and the photos will be taken in Store No. 39. Support this annual Lions fundraiser which in turn will support several community projects.

The Port Deposit Presbyterian Church 44 S. Main Street, will hold a Community Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve starting at 7 p.m. Plan to be there!

The Port Deposit Lions Club will hold their annual Carol Sing in front of the Bank Building in the town square near the town's Christmas tree. The singing starts at 7 p.m. and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Water Witch Fire Company will again provide hot chocolate and cookies. The holiday poem, "Twas the Night Before Christmas," will be read aloud and all children attending will receive a treat from Santa.
