With the deadline to file in this year's election for Havre de Grace City Council quickly approaching, the race remained limited to four candidates for three seats on the council as of Wednesday afternoon.
The seats currently held by Council members David Glenn, Bill Martin and Joseph Smith will be contested in 2014. Smith is not running for re-election, however, and is instead seeking a seat on the Harford County Council.
Four candidates, including Glenn and Martin, filed within 36 hours of the opening of the filing period March 4, but no more had filed as of Wednesday, according to city hall staff.
Steve Gamatoria, a former councilman, and Robert Robinson, a first-time candidate, also filed last week.
The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18. Election Day is May 6.
Municipal elections will also take place on the Cecil County side of the Susquehanna River this year.
The terms of Perryville Mayor Jim Eberhardt and Town Commissioners Barbara Brown and Raymond Ryan III are up this year.
Town Clerk Jackie Sample said Wednesday that no candidates have filed yet. Notice of the 2014 election is scheduled to be published Wednesday, March 19, Sample said, and candidates typically file after the notice is published.
Sample said the deadline to file is 5:30 p.m. April 14. Election Day is May 13. She said there is no filing fee, but candidates must be a registered voter and have lived within the Perryville town limits for at least one year before the election.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
