HdG's 10th community yard sale is Saturday

The Havre de Grace Historic Preservation Commission has a quiz for students in kindergarten through fifth grades and sixth through 12th grades to win an oval sticker "I Walked the Lafayette Trail." Quiz copies are available at the Havre de Grace Visitor Center, a great family project!

May 1 is celebrated worldwide with great fanfare in France and Russia with parades and speeches. May 1 is Labor Day in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. May Day is celebrated with a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaii and Law Day in Nevada.

How about a twirl around a maypole on May Day? The maypole's origins may be traced to pagan rituals celebrated by the Romans, who settled the British Isles and who worshiped the goddess Flora (goddess of flowers) on May 1.

It was April 30, 1803 that Napoleon of France sold to the USA for $15 million the real estate called the Louisiana Purchase. At approximately 2 cents per acre, that territory included the Mississippi River basin west, the Missouri River basin and the French ports of New Orleans and St. Louis. What a land deal!

The historic commission announced its historic preservation awards for 2013 at the City Council meeting, Ron and Carolyn Mathias accepted an award for the Hall House, 227 S. Union Ave., built 1835. This large Greek revival brick home is perhaps on the site of the original home of city founder, Robert Young Stokes. Gale Carriere accepted an award for the Terraces (Carriere House) built in 1931 at 410 Commerce St. This English cottage-style house sits looking over the Chesapeake Bay. Congratulations to these wonderfully preserved historic homes.
