Grace Place Serving Center will serve a free, hot meal April 29 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 N. Union Ave. in Havre de Grace. Phone 410-939-2107 for details. Volunteers will provide the luncheon to anyone who enters in need.

Charlie Mike told me that the Havre de Grace Independence Celebration Committee will hold this year's parade on Saturday, July 5, 410-939-4362. Fourth of July T-shirts are available at the Havre de Grace Visitor Center, 450 Pennington Ave., 410-939-2100. Cost $8 and $9 for 2X or 3X. The design was created by Havre de Grace High School Senior Hugh McFarland.

May 1 is celebrated worldwide with great fanfare – in France and Russia with parades and speeches. May 1 is Labor Day in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. May Day is celebrated with a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaii and Law Day in Nevada.

How about a twirl around a maypole on May Day? The maypole's origins may be traced to pagan rituals celebrated by the Romans, who settled the British Isles and who worshipped the goddess Flora (goddess of flowers) on May 1.

Buy your flora at the downtown Havre de Grace Farmers Market at Washington Street and Pennington Avenue, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays starting May 3.

First Fridays will resume May 3, 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Havre de Grace.

In conjunction with First Fridays May 2 the Joseph L. Davis Post 47 American Legion, 501 St. John St. hosts a pavilion party 5 to 8 p.m. with live music and eats – pit beef, ham or turkey $6, steamed shrimp $12 pound, boardwalk fries $2 and beverages.

The Susquehanna Ministerium will host a National Day of Prayer, noon to 1 p.m. at Havre de Grace City Hall, 711 Pennington Ave., May 1. Details 410-939-1796.

The Havre de Grace Decoy Museum presents its 33rd decoy and wildlife art festival May 2 through 4. Hours are Friday 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See 125 decoy carvers, artists, commercial outfitters and guide services. It was April 30, 1803 that Napoleon of France sold to the USA for $15 million the real estate called the Louisiana Purchase. At approximately 2 cents per acre, that territory included the Mississippi River basin west, the Missouri River basin and the French ports of New Orleans and St. Louis. What a land deal!

David Jaffe notified me that OPAC, the Ontario Otsego Positive Action Committee will host a candidate night for Havre de Grace city council Thursday, May 1, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at City Hall, Pennington Avenue.
