Man beats dog and another man in Harford Hounds 4 miler

Darren Thompson of Bel Air won the third annual Harford Hounds 4 Miler on July 4, while being pursued by a dog and its owner.

Thompson led a field of 78 runners over a flat, out-and-back course on the Greenway Trail in Susquehanna State Park, finishing in 23:43. In second place, 25 seconds behind him, was John Shaffer accompanied by his dog, Henry.

The event benefited Luna's House Animal Care Center, but it was not a race for dogs, who fare poorly running in hot weather. Race day was 10 degrees cooler than normal, however, making it easier on Henry and his master, who completed the course in 24:08.

Finishing in the men's top five were Jerry Henderson, 24:31; David Stevenson, 26:10; and Rob Bartholomew, 26:42.

Adria Pirozzi, 15, of Fallston ran well in the cooler conditions. In leading the women, she clocked 26:28, about 2 1/2 minutes faster than she ran last year in placing third.

Taryn Shank was the women's runner-up in 27:02. Jennifer Short placed third in 28:03; Courtney Waldhauser, fourth in 28:34; and Jennifer Bouffard, fifth in 29:40.
