Running numbers still up, despite down temperatures

Numbers are up and temperatures down midway through the RASAC Snowflake Series of winter races in Harford County. The seventh race in the series, the Get Schooled 5 Miler, was held Sunday in 25-degree chill with the Hairfields of Abingdon leading a field of 47 runners.

Pat Hairfield set the pace over roads not quite free of snow and ice on the HCC campus. He finished in 30:32, a fifth of a mile ahead of Mike Feinberg, the runner-up in 31:44. Michael Andrews, 33:07; David Stevenson, 33:17; and Saul Duarte, 33:20, finished in the top five.

Meghan Hairfield, sister-in-law of the men's winner, won the women's race with similar ease, running 33:47. Christine Trzcinski finished second in 36:16 and Courtney Waldhauser, third in 36:21. Andi Miller, 40:41, and Cathy Bartholomew, 41:18, took fourth and fifth.

The weekend races, which have rarely been canceled in the three decades the series has been held, have yet to coincide with the most severe weather this winter, which seems to arrive on a mid-week cycle. Three races remain in the 2014 series before more benign racing conditions return.

The eighth Snowflake race of the winter is the Tune-up 15K, which is to be held Sunday to prepare for the Maryland-D.C. 10-mile Roadrunners Club Championship on Feb. 23 in Howard County. The Tune-up course will have a new starting point, the Grist Mill in Susquehanna State Park.
