The host squad of this year's Cal Ripken Major 70 World Series, the Hickory Hornets 12U squad, battled to their first victory of the tournament on Monday, beating the Ohio Valley squad from Southeast Lexington, Ky., 8-6, in extra innings.
The win pushed the Harford County squad to 1-2 in National Division pool play, while Lexington also fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Leading 6-4 after five innings and needing just three outs to wrap up the victory in the top of the sixth, the Hornets allowed Lexington to tie the game with a pair of tallies.
After blanking the Kentucky squad in the top of the seventh, Harford County got things started in the bottom half of the inning when Steve Spencer reached base on an infield error. The Hornets' Spencer Sanza came up next and belted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall of Cal Sr.'s Yard for a walk-off home run.
Sanza ended the game 2-for-3 with team-high totals of three RBIs and three runs scored. Cameron Kalandros was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run, while teammate Evan Thatcher went 2-for-3 with a triple and one run.
Lexington's Colin Burgess went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
Kalandros pitched three innings, striking out five, walking one and allowing two earned runs on four hits to pick up the win. Thatcher tossed four innings, holding the opposition to one earned run on five hits and recording two strikeouts.
Perfect over four innings
He was only on the mound for four innings on Monday afternoon, but Kyle Mott of the Southeast squad from West Raleigh, N.C. was perfect for all of them, as he struck out three and did not allow a runner to reach base in his team's 12-0, mercy-rule victory over the Midwest Plains team from Mineral Area, Mo.
Raleigh improved to 2-0 in National Division pool play, while Mineral Area fell to 0-2.
The game, played at Cal Sr.'s Yard, was halted in the bottom of the fourth because Raleigh went ahead by more than 10 runs.
Raleigh's Tucker Jackson and Victor Vargas led their team at the plate, with each posting three RBIs and two runs.
Hornets topped Sunday
In the first of Sunday's National Division contests at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, the Harford County representatives from Hickory lost, 11-4, to the Southeast squad from West Raleigh, N.C.
The Hickory squad fell to 0-2 with the loss, while the North Carolina side moved to 1-0.
Harford County jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning, but West Raleigh exploded in the fourth inning, scoring all 11 of its runs.
West Raleigh's top bat belonged to Ryan Sholar, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Tucker Jackson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run in the victory.
Cameron Kalandros, Trent Gast-Woodard and Stelio Stakias each had one RBI for Harford County.
Delaware squad takes second win
The Middle Atlantic team from Piedmont, Del., improved to 2-0 in National Division pool play Sunday afternoon with an 8-2 victory over the Ohio Valley team of Southeast Lexington, Ky.
