7K race set for Ripken Stadium in September

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation will host its inaugural "Streak Thru Aberdeen" 7K Run at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen on Friday, Sept. 6 - the anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak.

Proceeds from the 7K will support Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation programs, which help build character and teach critical life lessons to underserved youth residing in America's most distressed communities through sports-themed programming.

"The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation is thrilled to host the first-ever 'Streak Thru Aberdeen' run on September 6," Steve Salem, president of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, said in a press release. "This fundraiser will help support the Foundation's mission of positively impacting the lives of at-risk youth across the country. The Harford County and Aberdeen communities have always been extremely supportive, and we're excited to have the opportunity to bring this race to Cal's hometown in celebration of the anniversary of him passing Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played."

The race will be a 7K (4.3 miles) course, representing the number worn by Cal Sr., and will create a unique distance challenge for runners looking for a race more than a 5K but not quite ready for a 10K.

The race will start at 6 p.m. at Ripken Stadium, with race day registration (and packet pick-up) beginning at 4:30 p.m. Pre-race registration (through June 30) will be $30 for adults; regular registration will be $40 for adults and $15 for youth (10 and under). Race packets for pre-registered participants will be available for pick-up on Thursday, Sept. 5 (noon to 6 p.m.) at the Charm City Run Store in Bel Air.

All participants will receive an Under Armour race day T-shirt, donated by Ripken Baseball. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will receive a custom-made "Streak Thru Aberdeen" Louisville Slugger bat signed by Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr.
