Communities throughout Harford County will recognize those who have sacrificed their lives for their country with a variety of Memorial Day tributes today (Monday).

In addition, municipal offices in Aberdeen, Bel Air and Havre de Grace are closed, as are those of Harford County government.

"I just hope people will realize the freedom we have isn't just a birthright," said Richard Ferguson, commander of American Legion Post 47 in Havre de Grace.

The post will hold a 9 a.m. memorial service in the veterans' section of Angel Hill Cemetery at 750 Ohio St.

The service will be followed by an 11 a.m. ceremony at Millard Tydings Memorial Park. Guest speakers include Havre de Grace Mayor Wayne Dougherty and Army Command Sgt. Maj. David Puig, who is stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Refreshments will then be served at the American Legion Post, 501 St. John St.

Aberdeen

City Manager Doug Miller said local organizations of the Catholic Veterans, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will put on a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in the city's Veterans Park at the intersection of South Rogers and North Parke streets, near the Aberdeen branch of the Harford County Public Library.

A meal will be served after the ceremony at the nearby Legion Post 128, 44 N. Parke St.

Bel Air

The Town of Bel Air, and American Legion Post 39, will hold a free public ceremony for Memorial Day. The event to honor veterans begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday and will be held at Lee Way and Hickory Avenue.
