The C. Milton Wright girls lacrosse team won its third straight game Saturday and its second at the Anne Arundel Community College Tournament. The Mustangs defeated Archbishop Spalding, after leading 7-6 at the half, 7-6.
Abby Smucker led the Mustangs with three goals, while Kaitlan Moynihan, Brooke Williams, Maggie Gallagher and Haley Matthai each scored two goals. Lauren Haggerty and Katie Burgee added single goals.
Williams, Haley Alexander, Moynihan and Smucker each had assists. CMW played two goalies with Alexis Strouse making nine saves and Heather McKee making four.
Haggerty also had a big day with six draw controls that aided the win.
"We shot a very low percentage today and Spalding's goalie made some really nice plays in the second half. We learned some things about ourselves this weekend and will continue to work to improve," CMW Head Coach Brent Ritz said.
The Mustangs also won Thursday night, beating Roland Park Country School, 13-9, at Anne Arundel Community College. The Mustangs outscored the Reds, 6-2, in the second half after going to halftime tied 7-7.
"It was a back and forth battle throughout the first half and draw controls became a major influence over which team had the opportunity to string consecutive goals together. While we competed in the first half, we were not pleased with our energy," Head Coach Ritz said. "After Roland Park took an 8-7 lead, a few tactical changes seemed to boost our defensive energy and communication leading to some forced turnovers. We closed the game with a 6-1 run as we worked to monopolize possession. I was pleased to see our girls work to develop their collective game sense and take care of the ball as our lead increased."
CMW was led by three, three-goal scorers in Moynihan, Smucker and Gallagher. Moynihan also supplied five of the Mustangs' six assists. Haggerty, Burgee, Alexander and Matthai also scored in the win. Burgee also had one assist.
CMW played two goalies with McKee making three saves and Strouse making two.
