Small petroleum spill spotted in Susquehanna River off Havre de Grace

A petroleum like substance of unknown origin was reported in the Susquehanna River off Havre de Grace late Monday afternoon, officials from the Harford County Department of Emergency Services said.

A driver traveling over the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge, between Havre de Grace and Perryville, reported a fuel sheen on the water around 4:29 p.m., according to Robert Thomas, spokesperson for the Harford County Department of Emergency Services.

The Harford County Hazmat Team responded and found a 5-foot by 25-foot petroleum-based slick near the bridge, Thomas said.

He said the Hazmat Team was unable to find the source of the spill and cleared the scene in about 25 minutes.

Thomas could not confirm if the Hazmat team had cleaned up the material.

He said oil spills occur frequently throughout the state.
