The State Fire Marshal's Office is attempting to identify a person who allegedly set fire to a picnic table at the Conowingo Boat Launch April 22, fire officials said. The fire engulfed a wooded area.
According to Fire Marshal spokesperson Bruce Bouch, a vehicle stopped at a boat launch area around 1:30 p.m. The driver got out of the car and was seen on surveillance camera at a picnic table in the area.
After the vehicle left, the picnic table was seen on fire on the surveillance camera, Bouch said in a news release. The fire spread to a wooded area adjacent to the table.
Firefighters from Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company responded to the area, Bouch said.
"It was a one-alarm fire," Oliver Alkire, spokesperson for the fire marshal's office, said. "Only the table and nearby ground cover was damaged. The table was completed destroyed."
The vehicle is believed to be a four-door dark colored Pontiac Sunfire or similar model type, Bouch said.
According to Alkire, fire investigators determined the fire was an isolated incident. He said the fire was arson and the suspect used an "accelerant" and "an open flame device" to spark the fire.
Anyone with information concerning the suspect or vehicle involved is asked to call the North East Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal, 410-836-4844.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
