African-Americans in Harford racing

An 1892 painting by American painter Gean Smith of famed African-American jockey Issac Murphy riding the champion filly Yorkville Belle hangs at the historic Hays-Heighe House at Harford Community College, through a gift from former HCC president Jim LaCalle and his wife, Lynne. The portrait is the impetus for an upcoming exhibit at HCC about African-American jockeys and other African-American contributors to the sport in and beyond Harford County.
