Peter G. Angelos, the Baltimore Orioles' principal owner, has donated $1 million to his alma mater, the University of Baltimore School of Law, to support an academic partnership with the state's four historically black colleges and universities, the law school announced Tuesday.
The five-year-old Baltimore Scholars program will be renamed the Fannie Angelos Program for Academic Excellence, after Peter Angelos' sister, who is also a graduate of the law school.
The initiative annually offers 80 students from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Bowie, Coppin and Morgan state universities a semester-long prep course for the Law School Admission Test. It also gives eight students, selected as "scholars," a shot at a full scholarship to UB Law.
The gift comes on top of a recent $15 million donation Angelos made to the school for a new law center, which is named after his parents.
